FALMOUTH, MA (July 22, 2015)—Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod (SCC) , the only facility on Cape Cod offering hospital-level rehabilitative care, has renewed its commitment as Official Sponsor of the wheelchair division of the New Balance Falmouth Road Race at least through 2017, organizers announced today.

Last year, SCC debuted as the Official Sponsor just as the event celebrated 40 years of hosting a wheelchair division. Over the decades, the race has been won by some of the top names in the sport, and 2014 was no exception: the women’s division was won by Tatyana McFadden, an 11-time Paralympic medalist who will return on August 16.

“Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod (SCC) is excited to partner again this year with the New Balance Falmouth Road Race as the official sponsor of the wheelchair division,” said Maureen Banks, president of Spaulding Cape Cod. “SCC is dedicated to enabling individuals of all abilities to lead active, healthy lifestyles. Participation in sports and recreational pursuits helps to make this possible. This partnership is a great opportunity for us to highlight the work that Spaulding Cape Cod does for our patients to help them find the strength to get back to the people, places, and activities that give their lives meaning.”

Among the services of SCC is an Adaptive Sports Program, which provides an environment in which patients can learn a new sport or return to one they already love pursuing.

“We are excited and honored that Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod wants to continue as such an important part of the New Balance Falmouth Road Race,” said Scott Ghelfi, president of the Falmouth Road Race, Inc., board of directors. “Our race was one of the first in the world to include a wheelchair division, and SCC is a pioneer in so many valuable, innovative ways. When they joined us last year, we thought it would be an ideal fit—and it is.”

In addition to winning her 11 Paralympic medals—including one in Nordic skiing in the 2014 Winter Olympics—McFadden, 26, is a two-time winner (2013, 2014) of the Abbott World Marathon Majors “grand slam” of Boston, London, Chicago, and New York in the same calendar year. No other athlete has earned that distinction even once. Just last month, McFadden set three world records on the track, at 400 meters, 800 meters, and 1500 meters, and earlier this month she was among the 2015 ESPY Award nominees as Best Female Athlete with a Disability.

McFadden is pursuing her Child Life Certification and in 2014 interned at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital toward her degree.

The 43rd running of the New Balance Falmouth Road Race will be Sunday, August 16, 2015. For more information, please visit our website at www.falmouthitf.wpengine.com; our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/falmouthroadrace; and our Twitter feed at www.twitter.com/falmouthrr.
