FALMOUTH, MA (September 24, 2014)—More than three dozen athletes were celebrated Tuesday night at the second-annual New Balance Falmouth Road Race Awards and Recognition Reception, held at the Coonamessett Inn.
Highlighting the evening, Connor Cobb and Anne Preisig were honored with the Margaret Bradley Award as the fastest male and female finishers from Falmouth.
Cobb, 19, who played soccer and tennis at Falmouth High School, is a student at Bucknell University and runs for its cross-country team. Preisig, 47, coaches the cross-country team at Cape Cod Academy and is a former national champion in the duathlon. Preisig also won the award in 2013.
The Margaret Bradley Award is named for a Falmouth High School graduate who lost her life in 2004 while on a run in the Grand Canyon at the age of 24. In presenting the award, Bradley’s father, Keith, praised the ongoing commitment of the Falmouth community to its young runners.
“Give them someone to guide them and they are going to take off on their own,” he said. “I thank the road race and all the people in the community who have done this for our children.”
Also honored at the reception were the male and female winners of the race’s nine age groups as well as the first male and female finishers in each age group who reside in Falmouth and winners of the inaugural Youth Mile, which was open to Falmouth residents ages 9-14.
Among the honorees was the father-son duo of Ken and Caleb Gartner. Ken, 54, was the first Falmouth finisher in the 50-54 age group, while Caleb, 11, was the top Falmouth finisher in the 7-14 age group.
In a remarkable feat, Caleb also won his age group at 800 meters in the SBLI Family Fun Run on the Friday night before Sunday’s race as well as the Youth Mile (5:47.78) on Saturday night.
“If the New Balance Falmouth Road Race is an example of what our community means to running, Ken and Caleb, along with all of the other winners here tonight, are great examples of what running means to our community,” said Scott Ghelfi, president of the Falmouth Road Race, Inc., board of directors, who presided over the awards event. “There is always a ‘next generation,’ and everyone in this room is dedicated to the task of keeping the spirit of running alive in our community for years to come.”
Wrapping up the evening, it was announced that the race’s 2014 Numbers for Nonprofits Program helped to raise $2,977,779 for local nonprofits as of September 15. Compassionate Care ALS raised $412,755, the most by any Falmouth-based group. In addition, Betsy Hike was an honored guest after receiving the John and Lucia Carroll Service Award for her years of volunteerism for the race.
