FALMOUTH, MA (July 18, 2017)—Each year, dozens of world-class athletes from across the country and around the world converge on Falmouth to compete in the New Balance Falmouth Road Race, creating the opportunity for local families to develop a lasting relationship with some of the best runners and wheelchair athletes in the world.
In the past 10 years, elite athletes have hailed from Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Burundi, Great Britain, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Uganda, Russia, Canada, Poland, and South Africa, in addition to the United States. Among them have been dozens of Olympians, including several medalists and at least one World Champion.
Opportunities are available to host athletes in both the open and wheelchair divisions of the road race and in the Aetna Falmouth Elite Mile. This year, the race is especially seeking families with accessible accommodations who are eager to host athletes in the wheelchair field, which promises to be one of the best and deepest in the race’s 45-year history.
Among the athletes who have stayed over the years with a host family is Neely Gracey, who first competed here in 2012 and expects to be among the elite field for the 45th running on August 20.
“The host family program is without a doubt one of the reasons I keep coming back,” said Gracey, whose host family is Vince and Kathryn Greco. “The relationship with my family goes way beyond Race Weekend. I value their year-round support and I love getting updates on their races. Having the opportunity to experience ‘life as a local’ is so much more fun than sitting alone in a hotel room, which is what I do at most races.”
Anyone interested in more information about joining the New Balance Falmouth Road Race’s host family program should contact organizers at 508-540-7000 or at info@falmouthroadrace.org.
